Hot Picks for the week of July 8, 2010 (That's Thursday folks!!!)

MARVELMAN FAMILYS FINEST #1 - This isn’t Shazam!, this is Marvel Man! Some of you (hopefully) will recognize him as Miracle Man. In the 80’s Alan Moore (Swamp Thing, League of Extraordinary Genltemen, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, etc.) re-launched the 1950’s British hero. Neil Gaiman (Sandman, “Neverwhere”, “Stardust”, “American Gods”, etc.) wrapped up that series and since then… well there has been a lot of drama about who owns the rights to the character. Last year at Comic-Con (coming next week!), Marvel announced that they would be publishing the series as “Marvel Man”.

Thursday the wait is over. Will Marvel Man re-capture the magic lightning (pun intended) that Moore & Gaiman turned into a comic legend? Will Marvel Man join the Marvel Universe proper? Will he be the next Avenger?

It all starts here!

AVENGERS CHILDRENS CRUSADE #1 - The creators of the Young Avengers, Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, return to take the YAs on a self-contained (no cross-overs! no ancillary one-shots!) maxi-series that promises to both establish the YA in the Heroic Age and also re-introduce the long departed Scarlet Witch to modern continuity! Heinberg and Cheung originally turned the Young Avengers into the “hot, must read title of 2005-2006), and now take on both the popular young team and (with almost no ceremony, e.g., marketing) are about to re-introduce the Scarlet Witch… the mutant responsible for the whole House of M fiasco… the one who put the “mutant cap” on the species…

X-FORCE #28 - Second Coming, one of the best “long” story-arcs to come to comics in the last five years, begins its final scene. “It’s all lead up to this!” Of course it has! The last two chapters of the big Mutant event starts here.

SCARLET #1 - Brian Michael Bendis, the mind that brought you Powers, introduces a new creator-owned property, “Scarlet”. What’s that you didn’t read Powers? Maybe you’ve heard of some other stuff Bendis has had his hands in… The New Avengers, Secret War, Secret Invasion, or Siege perhaps?!? Yes, that Bendis. But this doesn’t look like your “every day super hero” comic. In fact, with Alex Maleev on board, Scarlet promises to be more in the vein of Alias or Daredevil than the uber-powered mega books Bendis has been writing of late.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #636 - The Grim Hunt continues! Amazing Spider-Man #635 left us all aghast. Like, “What the?!?”, “How could…?!?”… so now, what’s next!?! The (almost) year-long Gauntlet has led to the Grim Hunt and turned up the heat. The Kraven family versus the Spider-People.

You may also want to check out X-Men #1!!! The beginning of the newest X-title and the start of the Curse of the Mutants epic! It's Vampires vs. Mutants! It's like Twilight, except with Mutants! And Wolverine!!!
