Hot Picks! August 4, 2010

HELLBOY THE STORM #2 - Over 15 years ago, a big red galhoot made his debut at Comic-Con. Mike Mignola, already a respected figure in comics (the Hulk, Cosmic Odyssey, Rocket Racoon, and more) introduced Hellboy. Since then he has gone from to the occasional mini-series to becoming a big Hollywood star. With a sequel even. With “The Storm”, Mignola (w/ co-writer Christopher Golden) and Ben Steinbeck return to the world of Hellboy. Sans the B.R.P.D., the big fella is on a foreign shore in the middle of a new adventure. If you’ve ever enjoyed Hellboy come back.

Also this month, if you’re a Mignola fan, Dark Horse is publishing the first Baltimore comic, based on the characters created in Mignola’s novel of the same name.

SUPERMAN THE LAST FAMILY OF KRYPTON #1 (OF 3) - Legendary DC scribe Cary Bates takes us to a Superman Elseworlds where baby Kal-El is rocketed from his dying homeworld… but this isn’t the case of child neglect we grew up with, Ma and Pa El are along for the ride! Join Bates, Renato Arlem for this three-issue mini-series, with FANTASTIC covers by Felipe Massafera.

SECRET SIX #24 - I admit it, I haven’t read a single Secret Six issue, ever. Sure, I was fan of the Suicide Squad for a long time, but somewhere along the way lost interest. But the buzz over this series has been strong for the past few months and the cover and preview blurb for Secret Six #24 has piqued my curiosity:

“In a small, corrupt mining boom-town, six remarkable strangers who hate each other band together in a bloody last stand against an army set on destroying them all!”

AVENGERS ORIGIN #5 (OF 5) - The updating/re-imagining of the Avengers origin comes to its conclusion. Written by Joe Casey, with fantastic art by Phil Noto, I can all-but promise this will be the best Avengers book you read this week.

ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS 2 #6 (OF 6) - Mark Millar’s second Ultimate Avengers arc comes to a conclusion, as the Ghost Rider saga reaches its denouement. This arc started out strong, got a little weird (for the Ultimate Universe) in the middle, but has been a pretty good tale.
